Avicii mixes Strictly Miami

Swedish DJ and producer Avicii has mixed the second installment of Strictly Miami.

Founded in 1989, New York's Strictly Rhythm has a built a global reputation for feel-good, party-friendly house. This has been crystallized in part through their array of mix series, including Strictly Miami, which kicked off last year with a double CD mixed by Karizma and Eddie Thoneick. Always one to foster new talent, this year the label approached Avicii to helm the mix's sophomore edition. Though only 21, the success of the Swedish youngster's productions has earned him high profile gigs around the world. Having won the award for Best Breakthrough Artist at Miami's IDMAs last week, he seems an especially fitting choice for the series.

Claude Von Stroke

Interview by Nick Stevenson. Originally published in Mixmag in November 2009.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I have this documented in a picture book I made when I was a kid. I wanted to own either a toy factory or a cookie factory. We took pictures of me with a top hat and a cane and a bunch of cookies and toys. When I retired I wanted to be a hillbilly with ?a huge beard and a farm.

What’s the worst club you’ve ever been to?
I’m from Cleveland and Detroit so I know what it’s like when people bad-mouth your city, but I’ve had some bad luck in Birmingham [UK] – three times in three different clubs. I’m finally ready to go back and see if I can make it right there. It’s got to be a coincidence.

What’s been your worst job?

I had just graduated from University and moved to LA to try and break into the film biz. My first job was selling fake perfume out of the trunk of my car.

What are you obsessed with?
Finishing everything I start.

And what do you hate right now?
Kanye West and Jamie Fox’s auto-tune tracks. Fake-ass fools!

When and where were you happiest?
When we were positive our second kid was a boy and she came out a ?girl. I must admit I cried. We got one of each. Amazing!

What’s the best record ever made?
My favourite dance track is Cajmere ‘The Percolator’, but I don’t believe there is a ‘best record ever made’.

What’s the coolest thing in your house?
I have a robot that prints commercial full colour CDs. Everyone loves watching the robot arm go to work picking up CDs and putting them in bins when they are done.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?
To summarise Derrick Carter: “I worked the door, I worked security, I worked the bar, I did my own parties, I showed up every night just in case someone else didn’t. You gotta work hard, and then when you ‘make it’, you work even harder.”

Who’s your all-time hero and why?
Rick Rubin. He started Def Jam out of his college dorm room producing Run DMC, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and The Beastie Boys. His parents told him he was crazy until he sent them a copy of his first label royalty check for $600,000. Later on, he jumped genres and produced Chili Peppers, Slayer and even went as far out as the Dixie Chicks. And he has a huge beard.

What do you collect – apart from records?
Nothing, and if I don’t use something for six months it’s going on eBay or to goodwill.

Who was your first love and what happened?
I bit her in the sandbox and she cried.

What were you doing at 2pm last Sunday afternoon?
Having a BBQ at my house with all the Dirtybird crew and my family.

What’s your answer to everything?
Work harder.

On a scale of one to 10, how good are you in the sack?
On the main event I’m no porn star but my fingers are quite nimble and I’m not afraid to use my tongue. Let’s say eight.

What’s your most prized possession that you’ve still got from when you were a kid?
Like I said, I don’t really keep anything around. But I have a few oil paintings by my grandfather in my house. He was a real artist.

Have you ever had a homosexual experience?
Besides admitting Brad Pitt is hot, no.

What was your last treat for yourself?
Some new T-shirts from Upper Playground.

What do you spend your money on?
My kids.

What’s your drug of choice?
Ganja, but I barely smoke it any more.

What can’t you live without?
I couldn’t make a living without the internet.

Do you have a recurring dream?
Nope, but I certainly have a lot of crazy non-recurring dreams.

What would you change about yourself if you could?
I’d get a bit more healthy.

What’s the worst item of clothing you’ve ever worn?
A tan and white pirate vest type thing with matching pants a girlfriend bought me in the 90s. I wore it to work and halfway through the day I saw myself in the mirror and couldn’t believe what a boy band-looking twat I was.

If you had a Tardis, what time would you go back to?
1984, to produce hip hop beats.

What’s your lamest claim to fame?
My remix of ‘Put Your Hands Up For Detroit’.

Stanton Warriors "New York"

Stanton Warriors return this March with a hotly anticipated new artist album ‘Warriors’, and Mixmag has got a world exclusive of the video from their latest single ‘New York’ – out next week.
Featuring a lot men walking past each other, staring, leather, waist coats, aviators and Kung Fu fighting, these kids are fast as lightening, and Mixmag found it a little bit frightening, but if you can get out from behind the sofa for long enough, check it out, because it’s rather good.

Carl Craig: once upon a time in Detroit

Carl Craig is marking the 20th anniversary of his Planet E label with a compilation album, live tour and monthly remixes of classic archive tracks throughout the year.
In this extensive interview, the Detroit icon talks to FACT’s Justin Toland about the origins of his label, overlooked and influential Planet E recordings, the difficulty of finding young producers to carry on the Motor City’s techno lineage, new works and plans for the future.

“It’s always great to go back to the old DAT tapes.

Planet E is 20 years old this year: What are you doing to mark this milestone for the label?
“Well, we have an LP coming out that’s called 20 Fucking Years. It’s a collection of releases from over the 20 years that Planet E’s been in business. And we’re going to release that next month and we have a slew of remixes to commemorate it as well, because we have  friends and fans and family. You know, family’s everyone that has been good over the years and has been supportive, and we just want to show how far that support lays.”

How did you go about selecting which tracks would appear on the compilation? Was it difficult to choose?

“Yeah. I think that because there are restrictions involved, even when you’re doing digital: you don’t want to end up with a hundred tracks, too many tracks for people to go through, so we wanted to offer what we felt was a good representation, that were some of our best tracks, as well as some of our long lost tracks. It was a journey going through it, but for years we’ve been kind of preparing because we’ve been archiving and listening and finding things and rediscovering things. It’s been really great – it’s always great to go back to the old DAT tapes.”

understand you’re also launching a competition around the vinyl edition of the compilation, or a kind of listener’s poll: can you explain more?
“Well, because there’s so many tracks I feel it’s better to let the fans A&R what they’d like to see on the vinyl in comparison to us just telling you what we’re going to give you on the vinyl, you can actually select. So, from the tracks that we have on digital the people can select what they feel that they are missing on vinyl, what they’ve missed or just what they’d really like to see on the compilation.”

I guess some of the selections are going to be pretty obvious. Are there any particular Planet E tracks that you think have been under-appreciated over the years, that you’d like people to listen to again, or for the first time?
“Well, the ‘Nort Route’ track [by Balil], which is a big favourite of mine. It’s something that defined the label between what my influences are and what friends’ [influences] are. ‘Nort Route’ was on Kirk DeGiorgio’s label as well, and Kirk’s been a great friend of mine for, well, over 20 years. And there are some records like Attias’ ‘Analysis’ which I think kind of went under the radar, but then there are things that probably are a bit more known.

“It’s hard to surprise me.”

You also mentioned this series of remixes. How did you go about selecting which tracks people were going to remix?
“We kind of fielded it to the people that we asked – ‘Hey, what would you like to mix?’, and people gave us an idea of what they had always wanted to touch or thought that they could improve upon. So it wasn’t a situation where I walked in and said: ‘You shall remix this!’ It was more like, ‘Okay, here’s the catalogue, are you interested in doing a mix?’. ‘Yeah, I’ve always wanted to remix Recloose.’ ‘Okay, let’s do it’.”

Has anyone surprised you with what they’ve picked to remix?

“Nah! It’s hard to surprise me.”

Art Department

Art Department have unveiled details for their debut album, The Drawing Board.

Given the soaring popularity of last year's "Without You," you'd think Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow had been at it together for years. In fact, though both artists have long been active in Toronto's club scene, that 12-inch was the first (and is still the only) record in the duo's catalog. Much like that massive single, their debut album is all about sinister but sexy vocal house, often with Glasgow's own deep croon. The Drawing Board also features a few guest appearances: Seth Troxler delivers vocals on a new track called "Living the Life" as well as the already released "Vampire Nightclub," and Osunlade joins Boston duo Soul Clap on "We Call Love."

The album will come out on CD through Crosstown Rebels at the end of April. A month ahead of its release, Art Department will debut their new live act during the Get Lost party at Electric Pickle in Miami.

Tracklist
01. Much Too Much
02. Tell Me Why (Part I)

Trentemøller plots international tour

This Friday, Trentemøller kicks off an international tour that will take him to three continents by the beginning of May.

The Danish electronic artist is currently in demand as both a DJ and a live act, though each performance shows a very different side of his sound. Behind the decks, he's upbeat and unpredictable, interspersing dark club tracks with the occasional well-known pop tune. His live act is something closer to a rock concert, with a six-person ensemble playing selections from his albums. The first leg of the tour consists entirely of DJ dates, beginning this Friday in Berlin and finishing next month in Brazil. A few weeks later he'll deliver his live act at two massive US events: Miami's Ultra Music Festival and the Coachella festival in Southern California. All of the dates are in support of Into the Great Wide Yonder, which came out last year on In My Room.

In other Trentemøller-related news, word has it the Copenhagen-based artist has been tapped for the next edition of Late Night Tales, though details on that release are still forthcoming.

Marcus Intalex reveals debut album, 21

After 21 years on the scene, Manchester drum & bass artist Marcus Intalex is ready to release his debut album, fittingly entitled 21.

Intalex's contributions to drum & bass music have come in many forms, most of which involve colons: aside from his productions, there were his Soul:ution nights and radio shows, plus his two labels, Soul:R and Revolve:R, which gave an early break to artists like Calibre, Martyn and Instra:mental. Though firmly rooted in drum & bass, his sound owes just as much to techno and IDM, which makes him feel particularly at home in today's open-ended UK bass scene. "It's a 130-140 BPM tempo, and that's all it is: a tempo," he says. "It's an open script otherwise. It's brilliant." In fact, Intalex thinks his albums comes at a time that is, in some respects, especially healthy for drum & bass.

"To me, drum & bass is something that a lot of people have ridden on success-wise, and now people have to work a little bit harder because the spotlight is elsewhere. And they are doing exactly that. There seems to be a lot of innovative drum & bass music coming from a lot of different angles and different parts of the world. It's opened up a new appreciation for the subtlety in drum & bass: the deeper side has gotten more interesting than ever."

Much like his output over the years, 21 is both varied and coherent, with dubbed out drum & bass, atmospheric techno, a bit of acid and even a cover of Radiohead, Intalex's favorite band of all time. ("They are, musically, the best thing I've ever come across, far outreaching anything I've ever known.") Guest appearances come from fellow UK veteran Zed Bias, Lynx, S.P.Y. and NonPlus+ vocalist Riya among others. The album will be available as a triple-vinyl pack as well as digitally and on CD.

Tracklist
01. Make A Raise feat. S.P.Y. & Ras Tweed
02. Climbing Up The Walls feat. Lynx & Danny Fierce
03. Meltdown feat. Calibre
04. Hot Hands
05. Dusk
06. Celestial Navigation feat. S.P.Y.
07. Paulista feat. S.P.Y.
08. TB Or Not TB?

Paul Kalkbrenner

Melt! have revealed the first round of names for their 2011 festival, taking place as always at Leipzig's Ferropolis in July.

Probably the event's biggest coup so far is a headlining set from Pulp, Jarvis Cocker's widely loved and recently reformed rock band from the '80s/'90s, who will play their only German gig this year at the festival. Other indie acts include Robyn and Cut Copy. UK rapper The Streets will play as well.

Meanwhile, Melt!'s electronic contingent is led by Berlin icon Paul Kalkbrenner. Modeselektor will once again curate a Melt!Selektor stage, and the Sleepless Floor will feature showcases from BPitch Control and Live at Robert Johnson, headlined by Ellen Allien and Roman Flugel respectively. Loco Dice, M.A.N.D.Y., Gui Boratto and Tensnake are also billed, and Innervisions act Ame will play live. For something a bit more ear-splitting, veteran noisemakers Atari Teenage Riot will be on hand as well.

Cocoon Recordings

The label was founded in 2000 as a part of the Cocoon Music Event GmbH.

The company's other branches are Cocoon Booking (for Sven Väth, Ricardo Villalobos, Josh Wink etc. and Cocoon Clubbing, which organises club events as well as outdoor events and tours. Since July 2004, Cocoon also runs its own Club, located in Frankfurt, and being one of the most innovative club locations worldwide.

Sven founded Cocoon Recordings in order to complete the Cocoon platform as a supporting tool for young artists in Electronic Music. The label philosophy is as simple as demanding: helping young producers and DJs to release their music without depending on Major Label structures. The musical style of the releases is mainly Techno.

Cocoon Recordings releases have been charted by: Robert DietzNick Curly, Wehbba, Christian Burkhardt, Mauro Picotto, 16 Bit Lolitas, Lauhaus, Okain, Sascha Dive, Robert Dietz, Ray Okpara, Ryan Crosson, Christian Burkhardt, Phil Kieran, 16 Bit Lolitas, Christian Burkhardt, Luciano Esse, Franck Roger, Sian, Gregor Tresher, Paul Woolford, Einzelkind, Yousef, Paul Woolford, Tim Green, Lutzenkirchen, Robert Dietz, Oxia, Dominik Eulberg, Paul Woolford, Sian, Fabrizio Maurizi, Reboot, Marco Resmann, Todd Bodine
